It’s one of the most familiar pieces of health advice going. But is it genuinely necessary for everyone, or is it more of a one-size-fits-all default? It’s a fair question, and the answer is more nuanced than the rule itself suggests. Let’s look at where the guideline came from, why regular visits matter regardless, and how to work out the right frequency for you specifically. ## Where the twice-a-year rule came from The biannual recommendation has been around for decades, though its precise origins are surprisingly murky. Some trace it to toothpaste advertising from the 1950s, others to the structure of dental insurance policies. Wherever it began, it’s become deeply embedded in how most of us think about dental care. That hazy history isn’t a reason to dismiss it, but it is a useful reminder that the number isn’t a hard scientific law so much as a sensible general rhythm, one that suits many people well and some less so. ## Why regular visits matter Whatever the ideal interval, regular check-ups earn their place by doing several valuable things at once.
