The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) (https://www.tmjtherapycentre.com.au/tmj-pain-toorak/) sits just in front of each ear, and the muscles that work it extend up into the temples, forehead and back of the head. When those muscles are under sustained strain, the pain doesn''t always stay where it starts. This doesn''t mean every headache is a jaw problem. But for some people it''s the missing piece, and it''s worth understanding why. ## How jaw strain becomes head pain The muscles that open and close your jaw are large, powerful and in near-constant use. They also attach at their other end into the side of the head and the temples. So when the jaw muscles are overworked — through clenching, grinding, or an uneven bite — the fatigue and tension they generate can be felt as head pain rather than jaw pain. This is why the connection is so easy to miss. The place that hurts isn''t the place doing the work. ## Signs the jaw might be involved A few patterns make a jaw contribution more likely. Pain concentrated in the temples, behind the eyes, or across the sides of the head is a common pattern where the jaw muscles are involved. Other clues sit in the jaw itself: clicking or popping when you open and close, tenderness in front of the ears, a jaw that feels tired after eating, difficulty opening as wide as you used to, or teeth that show unusual wear. Neck and shoulder tension often travels with it, since those muscle groups work together. ## Why it''s often missed Headaches are commonly attributed to stress, screens, posture, dehydration or sleep — all of which are real contributors. The jaw rarely makes the list, so it goes unexamined. If you''ve worked through the usual suspects without lasting change, that''s a reasonable point to have the jaw looked at as part of the picture. ## What an assessment involves Understanding whether the jaw is contributing starts with examining how it actually works: its range of motion, whether it deviates to one side as it opens, how the upper and lower teeth meet, tenderness in the muscles, and signs of clenching or grinding on the teeth themselves. From there, the approach depends on what''s found. It might involve addressing clenching and grinding, looking at how the bite comes together, or working alongside other practitioners where posture, stress or sleep are part of the picture.
