Jaw tension and discomfort in the temporomandibular joint, the TMJ, are far more common than most people realise, and they’re frequently tied to things like posture, stress, and the way your bite comes together. The good news in that is straightforward: when everyday habits are part of the cause, everyday adjustments are often part of the relief. Understanding what’s feeding the tension is the place to start. ## What might be causing the tension Several factors tend to contribute, often in combination. Stress is a big one and not at all surprising; many people clench or grind their teeth when anxious, frequently without realising it, which strains the jaw muscles over time. Posture plays a part too, particularly the head-down position so many of us hold while looking at screens, which can shift the alignment of the neck and jaw. And if your teeth don’t meet evenly, that bite imbalance can add extra load to the joint. Rarely is there a single culprit; more often it’s these factors stacking up together. ## Signs you might notice Beyond obvious soreness in the jaw, the signs can be surprisingly varied. You might hear clicking when you open your mouth, feel tension spreading into your temples or neck, or find certain foods harder to chew comfortably. Some people also experience headaches that seem to radiate from around the jaw. Because these symptoms can masquerade as unrelated problems, it’s worth noticing whether they cluster together, which can be a clue that the jaw is involved. ## What you can do A number of simple measures can ease the strain. Relaxation techniques help if stress is a driver, and gentle jaw stretches can release built-up tension. Being mindful of posture, especially screen posture, takes pressure off the neck and jaw over the course of a day. A few small habits help too: avoid chewing gum for long stretches, and try not to rest your chin in your hand while sitting, which quietly loads the joint. And don’t underestimate rest; sometimes a little more sleep genuinely takes the edge off. ## When to have it looked at If your symptoms persist or worsen despite these adjustments, that’s the signal to have things checked.
