The tongue rarely gets a second glance. Yet it’s one of the most informative surfaces in the whole mouth, and it’s right there every time you look. Its colour, texture and coating shift in response to what’s happening in your mouth, and sometimes in the rest of your body too. Knowing roughly what’s normal, and what isn’t, turns a passing glance into a genuinely useful habit. None of this replaces a professional opinion, but it helps you know when one is worth seeking. ## What a healthy tongue looks like A healthy tongue is generally pink — neither washed-out pale nor deep angry red — with a slightly textured surface created by the tiny bumps called papillae. A thin, pale coating is completely normal and nothing to act on. If your tongue broadly matches that description and isn’t sore or bothering you, that’s a reassuring baseline. Knowing your own normal makes it far easier to notice when something genuinely changes. ## A white coating: the most common change A white film on the tongue is the variation people notice most, and in the majority of cases the explanation is straightforward. Bacteria, dead cells and food debris collect among the papillae, often linked to dry mouth, mouth breathing, or simply not drinking enough water. Gentle daily tongue cleaning usually keeps it in check. There are versions worth more attention, though. A thicker white coating that won’t brush away, or distinct white patches in particular spots, can sometimes relate to oral thrush, a yeast overgrowth that often follows a course of antibiotics, or to other conditions worth evaluating. If a white coating is persistent or spreading, mention it at your next visit. ## Redness or a smooth, glossy surface A tongue that looks unusually red, smooth or shiny, having lost some of its normal texture, can occasionally be associated with nutritional shortfalls such as low iron or certain B vitamins. Because it develops slowly, this kind of change is easy to overlook. A smooth, glossy or persistently inflamed tongue without an obvious cause is worth raising with a healthcare provider, who can look into whether anything underlying is contributing. ## Sores or patches that won’t settle Ordinary mouth ulcers on the tongue are common and usually heal themselves within a week or two. The ones that matter are those that don’t. Any sore, lump or discoloured patch that hasn’t resolved within two to three weeks should be assessed. That includes red or white patches that can’t be wiped or brushed away, and any area that feels thickened or raised. The large majority of these turn out to be harmless, but early assessment is always the sensible path, and it’s never something to put off out of worry. ## Everyday tongue care Looking after your tongue is simple. Clean it gently each day, either with a soft toothbrush or a tongue scraper, working from back to front. Staying hydrated helps keep coatings at bay, and addressing mouth breathing where possible reduces the dryness that lets debris build up. These small habits keep the surface healthier and, as a bonus, make genuine changes easier to spot against a clean baseline. ## When to bring it up Oral health never exists in isolation, and the mouth can sometimes reflect what’s happening elsewhere in the body.
