The answer is usually that it has been. Something is happening during sleep, and the discomfort you wake with is the result. Working out what that something is matters, because the useful response depends on the cause. ## Clenching and grinding The most familiar explanation is bruxism — clenching or grinding the teeth during sleep. It happens unconsciously, so most people don''t know they do it until someone hears it, or until the signs show up: worn or flattened teeth, tenderness in front of the ears, morning headaches, or a jaw that aches on waking. The forces involved are considerable and sustained over hours, which is why the effects are felt so clearly in the morning and often ease as the day goes on. ## When the jaw joint itself is involved Sometimes the discomfort relates to the temporomandibular joint (https://www.tmjtherapycentre.com.au/tmj-pain-toorak/) and surrounding muscles rather than only to grinding. If breathing is disrupted during sleep, the body responds — and one of those responses can involve the jaw and the muscles around the airway working harder overnight. This is why morning jaw pain is sometimes accompanied by other signs: waking unrefreshed, snoring, a dry mouth on waking, or daytime tiredness that doesn''t match the hours you slept.
