You slept the recommended number of hours. And you woke feeling as though you'd barely slept at all. It's a genuinely frustrating experience, and a common one. The explanation usually lies in a distinction we don't often make: time asleep and quality of sleep (https://www.tmjtherapycentre.com.au/sleep-apnoea-and-snoring-solutions/) are not the same thing. You can spend eight hours in bed and still not get the restorative sleep your body needs. ## What disrupts sleep quality Sleep moves through cycles, and the deeper stages are where much of the restoration happens. Anything that repeatedly interrupts those cycles — even briefly, even without fully waking you — can leave you unrefreshed regardless of the hours. Interruptions of this kind often go unnoticed, which is why people are puzzled by their own tiredness. You may have no memory of the night being disturbed at all. ## Where breathing comes in One of the more common reasons for fragmented sleep is disrupted breathing during sleep (https://www.tmjtherapycentre.com.au/sleep-apnoea-and-snoring-solutions/). When breathing becomes effortful or is briefly interrupted during sleep, the body responds — and those responses can pull you out of deeper sleep repeatedly across the night. Signs that this may be part of the picture include snoring, waking with a dry mouth, a partner noticing pauses or gasping in your breathing, morning headaches, and daytime sleepiness that doesn't match your hours. This is a medical matter. Conditions such as obstructive sleep apnoea are diagnosed by a physician, usually with a sleep study, and shouldn't be self-diagnosed. But recognising the pattern is what prompts people to get assessed, which is the point of knowing about it. ## The jaw and teeth connection There's a dental angle worth knowing. Overnight clenching and grinding often accompany fragmented sleep, and the signs show up in the mouth: worn or flattened teeth, jaw soreness on waking, headaches in the morning, tenderness in front of the ears. This is one reason a dentist sometimes notices signs of disturbed sleep before anyone else does — the evidence is visible on the teeth. ## What to do about it If you consistently wake unrefreshed, it's worth taking seriously rather than accepting as normal. Start with your GP, particularly if snoring, breathing pauses or significant daytime sleepiness are present. Alongside that, a dental assessment can look at whether there are signs of overnight clenching or grinding, and at jaw and oral anatomy that may be relevant.
