Childhood Sleep Apnoea

Though many people may not realise it, children can suffer from sleep apnoea, too. If your child has trouble focusing, sleeping or has behavioural troubles, it may be due to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Our dentist, Dr Wally Hassoun can evaluate your child for sleep apnoea and determine which treatment is most appropriate.

How Sleep Apnoea Affects Your Child

Sleep apnoea doesn’t just affect your child’s ability to get proper rest. They can also suffer from problems during the day, and be unable to pay attention in school which can lead to problems with their behaviour or overall health. It’s easily misdiagnosed, and often the behavioural issue is treated instead, despite that it is not the cause.

The signs and symptoms that you’ll notice your child suffers from OSA include:
Young boy with blond hair

  • Blocked nose
  • Difficulty breathing or pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Headaches
  • Loud snoring
  • Mouth breathing during sleep
  • Poor appetite and problems swallowing
  • Restless sleep
  • Snorting, gasping or choking during sleep
  • Waking up exhausted

The Causes of Sleep Apnoea

There isn’t a single cause of childhood sleep apnoea. The most common is enlarged tonsils. The tonsils sit at the back of the throat and grow a great deal between ages 2-7. Having the tonsils removed may be necessary. Another cause is obesity, in which case some dietary changes and an exercise program can address the problem.

Finally, an additional major cause is a small jaw or misaligned bite, which affects their breathing abilities. Orthodontics can bring their smile into proper alignment and open up the nasal passages.
