Fluoride: The Key to Stronger, Healthier Teeth

This naturally occurring mineral is one of the simplest, most effective defences your teeth have.

If you’ve visited us recently, you’ll likely have heard fluoride come up. But do you know why it matters so much? Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in many foods and water sources, and it’s well established as a way to strengthen teeth and help prevent cavities. Here’s a look at why it’s such an important part of dental health.

For something so everyday, it does a surprising amount of quiet, protective work.

    It helps prevent tooth decay

Fluoride works by making teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that drive decay. When you eat sugary or starchy foods, bacteria in the mouth produce acid that erodes enamel, and over time that can lead to cavities.

Fluoride helps on two fronts: it supports the neutralising of that acid and aids in remineralising enamel, restoring minerals to the surface. The result is teeth that are better able to withstand the daily acid cycle and stay strong.

    It's especially important for children

Children’s teeth are still developing, which makes them more vulnerable to decay, so getting enough fluoride matters all the more in childhood. Fluoride toothpaste, fluoridated water where available, and fluoride treatments at the dentist all contribute to strengthening young teeth and guarding against cavities.

Building this protection in early gives children’s teeth a stronger start, alongside the good habits that go with it.

It can help reverse early decay

One of fluoride’s more reassuring qualities is that it can help address very early decay. Early signs, such as small white spots on the enamel, can sometimes be improved as fluoride remineralises the surface, strengthening the tooth and helping prevent the decay from progressing further.

Caught early enough, in other words, a little extra fluoride and good care can sometimes turn things around before a cavity properly forms.

    Has it been a while?

By getting enough fluoride through water, toothpaste and other sources, and keeping up good habits, you give your teeth a strong foundation for years to come. If it’s been a while since your last visit, get in touch with TMJ Therapy Centre to book an appointment.
