What Kind of Braces Are Right for Me?

Metal braces or clear aligners — each has its strengths, and the right fit depends on you.

With so many orthodontic options available today, deciding which is right for you, or your child, can feel genuinely tricky. Traditional metal braces or clear aligners? What are the trade-offs of each? Here’s a plain-English look to help you understand the main options and what tends to suit different situations.

The short version: both work well, and the best choice depends on your particular teeth, goals and lifestyle.

    Traditional metal braces

Metal braces are the most familiar type, made of metal brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by wires. They’re strong and versatile, and can be used to correct even quite complex cases of misalignment.

A key strength is their reliability: because they’re fixed to the teeth, they work continuously, day and night, without any need to remember to wear them. They’re also durable, so they tend to hold up well throughout treatment. The trade-off is regular visits, usually every few weeks, to have the wires adjusted as your teeth gradually shift into place.

    Clear aligners

Clear aligners are made from clear plastic trays that fit snugly over the teeth. Their main appeal is discretion: they’re far less noticeable than metal braces, which makes them a popular choice for those who’d prefer a subtler option.

They’re also removable, so you can take them out to eat, brush and floss, which makes keeping your teeth clean more straightforward. The trade-off is that they rely on being worn consistently to work, and they aren’t always suited to more severe cases of misalignment.

    Who's a good candidate?

The honest answer is that it depends on the individual, which is why an in-person assessment is the real starting point. By looking at your teeth and bite, we can talk through which option is likely to suit you best and what to expect from treatment.
