Caring for Dentures: Tips for Keeping Them Clean and Comfortable
A little daily care keeps dentures comfortable, hygienic and lasting longer.

Dentures are a common and effective solution for people who’ve lost all or most of their natural teeth, helping restore the ability to eat and speak comfortably and supporting confidence along the way. Like natural teeth, though, they need proper care to stay in good condition and keep fitting well. Here are some practical ways to look after them.
None of this is difficult; it’s mostly about a consistent daily routine and a few sensible habits.
Handle and clean them with care
Dentures are more delicate than they look and can chip or break if dropped, so always handle them carefully, ideally over a folded towel or a basin of water to cushion any slips. Clean them at least once a day with a soft-bristled brush and a mild soap or proper denture cleaner, covering all surfaces, including the inside and any clasps, then rinse thoroughly before putting them back in.
It’s worth avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, which can damage the surface over time.
Keep them moist and check the fit
Dentures need to stay moist when they’re not being worn, so soak them overnight in water or a denture-soaking solution. This helps them hold their shape and prevents drying out or cracking. Taking them out at night also gives your gums a valuable chance to rest.
Over time, the shape of your mouth can change and dentures may loosen as a result. If they start to feel loose or uncomfortable, come in and we’ll check and adjust them as needed rather than letting an ill-fitting set cause sore spots.
Don't neglect what's left
If you still have some natural teeth, they, along with your gums and tongue, need looking after just as much. Brush twice a day and floss once daily to clear plaque and food particles and keep everything healthy.
Keep them safe
Dentures can be costly to replace, so store them somewhere secure when they’re out, and keep them away from hot or damp spots that could cause warping. A little caution here saves a lot of hassle.
Looking after your dentures well keeps them comfortable and helps them last as long as possible. If you have any concerns about your dentures, or you notice signs of wear or damage, we’re always here to help. Get in touch with TMJ Therapy Centre.
