Do You Have a Dental Emergency?
Knowing what counts as urgent — and what to do in the moment — makes all the difference.
· Last updated
Dental emergencies have a way of happening at the worst possible moment, and knowing how to respond promptly can genuinely affect the outcome. We understand how stressful these situations are, and we’re here to help you through them.
The first useful step is working out whether your problem needs urgent attention or can reasonably wait for regular hours. Here are some common signs of a dental emergency and what to do about each.
Severe toothache
Intense, persistent tooth pain can signal an underlying issue that needs prompt attention rather than waiting it out. Don’t simply push through it; get in touch with us as soon as you can so we can advise and arrange to see you.
Knocked-out tooth
With a knocked-out tooth, time really matters. Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root, and gently rinse it with water. If you can, place it back into its socket; if that’s not possible, keep it in a glass of milk or in saliva and get to us as quickly as you can. Acting fast gives the best chance of saving it.
Broken or fractured tooth
A broken or fractured tooth can be painful and may worsen if left. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to ease any swelling, then contact us promptly to arrange urgent care.
When it's a medical emergency, not just a dental one
It’s important to draw a clear line here. The guidance above is for dental injuries. If an injury involves a serious blow to the head, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, or heavy bleeding that won’t stop, that is a medical emergency, call 000 immediately. Dental concerns can be dealt with shortly afterward; those situations cannot wait.
