Love Coffee? Here's How to Keep Your Teeth White

You don't have to give up your morning brew to keep your smile bright.

Love your coffee? We don’t blame you, there’s something about that first fresh cup that makes the morning easier. But even the things we love have their downsides, and where coffee is concerned, your teeth tend to bear the cost. Drink enough of it and you may notice your smile isn’t quite as bright as it once was.

The reason comes down to a particular ingredient, and the good news is there’s plenty you can do about it.

    Why coffee stains teeth

Coffee is rich in compounds called tannins, which contribute to its taste and, less helpfully, to staining. Tannins have such strong colouring properties that they’ve historically been used in dyes for fabrics like linen and cotton, so it’s little wonder they can gradually tint your teeth.

Over time and repeated cups, those tannins work into the enamel, leaving the dulling, yellowing effect that many regular coffee drinkers notice.

Simple ways to keep your smile brighter

A few easy habits make a real difference. Brushing or rinsing with water after your coffee helps clear lingering tannins before they have a chance to settle. (Just give it a little time before brushing if your coffee was acidic, so you’re not brushing softened enamel.)

Sipping through a straw, particularly with iced coffee, reduces contact between the liquid and your front teeth, heading off stains at the source. A whitening toothpaste designed to gently lift surface stains can help with maintenance too, and we’re happy to suggest one at your next visit.

When you want a bigger change

If everyday habits aren’t quite enough and you’d like a more noticeable result, professional whitening is an option worth discussing. How much brightening is achievable varies from person to person, depending on the cause of the staining and your natural shade, so it’s best to talk through what’s realistic for you.
