3 Things Your Mouth Can Tell You About Your Health
Changes in your teeth and gums can sometimes hint at what's happening elsewhere in your body.
· Last updated
Your mouth can be a surprisingly informative window into your wider health. Changes in your teeth or gums sometimes hint at things happening elsewhere in the body, which is one more reason regular check-ups are valuable. Here are three signs worth paying attention to, framed as prompts to seek advice rather than cause for alarm.
1. A sudden burst of cavities
If you’ve generally had few cavities and then suddenly find several at one visit, it’s worth looking at why. One possibility worth ruling out is difficulty processing glucose, as can occur with diabetes, since changes in saliva can affect the teeth. Of course, more everyday explanations, like eating more sweets or a change in medication, are also common. Either way, a pattern shift is worth a conversation.
2. Teeth that seem to be wearing away
Teeth grinding can wear down the surfaces of the teeth, but another cause worth considering is acid reflux, sometimes known as GERD, where stomach acid reaches the mouth and can erode enamel. Reflux may also bring a burning sensation in the throat or chest. It can be managed with the help of your doctor, so it’s worth raising if you suspect it.
3. Gums that bleed when you brush
Gums that consistently bleed during brushing can be an early sign of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, which if left can progress to more serious periodontitis. Researchers continue to explore links between gum health and broader health, including the heart, which is all the more reason to take bleeding gums seriously. That said, bleeding can also simply mean you’re brushing or flossing too hard, so it’s worth getting it checked rather than assuming the worst.
