Six Foods That Can Improve Your Smile

A handful of everyday foods quietly work in your smile's favour.

They say you can eat your way to better health, but what about eating your way to a better smile? There’s genuinely something to it. Not all foods are equal where your teeth are concerned, and some quietly support healthier teeth and gums as part of a balanced diet. Here are six worth getting onto your plate.

A quick note: these are helpful additions alongside good daily care, not a substitute for brushing, flossing and check-ups.

    Dairy products

Dairy foods are rich in calcium and other minerals that help keep teeth strong, and they can also help neutralise acids in the mouth that would otherwise wear at enamel. A little cheese, milk or yoghurt is an easy, tooth-friendly choice.

    Sweet potatoes

Beyond being delicious, sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A plays a role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums, making this colourful vegetable a smile-friendly addition to meals.

    Garlic

Garlic contains a compound called allicin, which is often associated with supporting a healthy balance of microbes. While you needn’t overstate its powers, it’s a flavourful addition to a varied diet that supports overall wellbeing, gums included.

    Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a useful source of vitamin D, which supports strong teeth and bones, and they contain antioxidants that contribute to general health. They’re an easy way to add a little nutritional variety to your meals.

    Crunchy vegetables

Crunchy veggies like celery act almost like a natural toothbrush, helping clear plaque and food particles as you chew. They also stimulate saliva production, which is one of your mouth’s key natural defences, making them doubly worthwhile.

    Onions

Onions contain sulphur compounds and other nutrients that contribute to a healthy, varied diet. Enjoyed as part of your regular meals, they’re another flavourful way to support your overall, and oral, health.

    Eating for a healthy smile

A varied, balanced diet that includes foods like these supports your smile alongside good daily habits. If it’s time for a check-up, we’d love to see you. Get in touch with TMJ Therapy Centre to book a visit.
