How Stress Affects Your Gums and Smile

Beyond grinding, stress works on your smile through your body's chemistry and your cravings.

When we picture stress, we usually think of anxiety, tension, racing thoughts, poor sleep or raised blood pressure. Less obvious is the mark it can leave on your smile. Stress affects oral health in several ways, and recognising them is the first step to keeping your mouth healthy through demanding times.

Here are three of the key ways stress shows up in your smile, and how to respond.

    Stress, cortisol and your gums

During stressful periods, your body produces more cortisol, a hormone tied to the stress response. When cortisol stays elevated, the body prioritises dealing with the perceived threat, which can affect how well it manages everyday challenges, including keeping the gums healthy.

The upshot is that prolonged stress may make you more susceptible to gum problems. It’s not a certainty, but it’s a reason to be a little more attentive to your gums when life is intense, rather than less.

    Stress, clenching and headaches

Notice more headaches when you’re under pressure? Jaw clenching and teeth grinding, known as bruxism, may be part of the story. Bruxism often happens during sleep, and that sustained clenching can lead to morning headaches as well as gradual wear on the teeth.

Because it’s largely unconscious, the signs, sore jaw, worn teeth, recurring headaches, may be the first you know of it. They’re worth mentioning if they crop up.

    Stress and comfort eating

For many of us, stress steers us toward comfort foods we’d normally pass up, ice cream, sweet treats, sugary drinks. They may soothe in the moment, but too many take a toll on oral health over time, contributing to dull teeth, cavities and plaque build-up.

Being aware of the pattern is half the battle; it’s easier to make a tooth-friendly choice when you can see the stress-snack reflex for what it is.
