    The Science Behind Teeth Whitening

Whitening can feel like magic — but there's some genuinely interesting science behind it.

Shade guide showing tooth whiteness levels

Plenty of people leave a whitening appointment with a noticeably brighter smile, and it can feel almost magical. It isn’t, of course, there’s some genuinely interesting science behind how whitening works. Understanding it also helps set realistic expectations and care for your teeth properly afterward.

Here’s a closer look at what’s actually happening.

Your teeth are more porous than they look

Teeth may not look or feel like a sponge, but they contain tiny pores. During whitening, the gel is absorbed into these pores and works to lift out the stains held within, which is how teeth can brighten over a relatively short session. It’s a chemical process rather than simple surface scrubbing.

    Why sensitivity can happen

Some tooth sensitivity during or after whitening is entirely normal, and quite a few people experience naturally sensitive teeth to begin with. Whitening can temporarily dehydrate the teeth, which for a day or so can make them less able to buffer against temperature changes, hence the sensitivity.

It usually settles on its own within a day or two. A suitable over-the-counter pain reliever can ease any discomfort in the meantime, and a fluoride treatment soon after whitening can help rehydrate and soothe the teeth.

    Aftercare matters

Straight after whitening, the pores in your teeth remain open and more susceptible to staining, so it’s wise to avoid darkly coloured foods and drinks for at least the first 24 hours after an in-chair session. If you whiten at home, doing so before bed can help, since you’re unlikely to eat or drink while you sleep, giving the pores time to close with less staining risk.
